Check out our winter projects where we transformed the Great Room with a fresh coat of paint, revamped the shop, and converted the west porch into a cozy sitting area. Additionally, Chris skillfully replaced multiple faucets and performed wood repairs on chairs, desks, and cabinets. Needless to say, it's been a highly productive winter at the farm.
Undertaking a significant endeavor, we tackled the replacement of a half-century-old septic tank. This ambitious project demanded the use of substantial equipment to handle earth-moving and lift heavy objects. Upon its successful completion, the main house will reap the considerable benefits of this upgrade.
During June, we successfully completed the installation of a brand-new metal roof on our century-old barn. Throughout the project, we made necessary adjustments to the foundation and added additional support where needed. The overall outcome was a resounding success.
Among our initial endeavors, revamping the old Chicken Coop into a modern Hen House stood prominent. Chris and JoAnn dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to this endeavor, and their efforts bore fruit as they skillfully constructed a secure, fenced community for our cherished chickens.
Our feathered friends quickly outgrew their original coop, prompting the need for a redesign focused on enhanced predator protection. Drawing inspiration from the beloved old coop, our team - Chris, JoAnn, Becky, and Todd - proudly presents the Chicken Coop II, a remarkable upgrade. With expanded dimensions and a fortified fence, this new coop is designed to ensure our chickens' safety and comfort.
And then there were two. As winter approached rapidly, it became clear that we required a more secure coop to shelter our two cherished Chicken Ladies. And then there were two. As winter approached rapidly, it became clear that we required a more secure coop to shelter our two cherished Chicken Ladies. Ensuring their comfort during the bitter -30 degree nights was paramount. Thus, Chris and Joyce set their sights on the woodshed and embarked on a comprehensive renovation, from the floor to the walls and up to the roof. This transformation would see the woodshed reverting to its original purpose - a cozy Chicken Coop!
This scene is peaceful and quiet, with the only sounds being the rustling of leaves and the occasional bird call. The woodshed and the stack of logs are a reminder of the hard work that went into chopping the trees, and the importance of having a good supply of firewood for the winter months.
However, the woodpile located near the woodshed is quite large, with many logs piled on top of each other. Some of the logs are partially chopped, while others would be whole. The logs are in various stages of decay, with some of them showing signs of rot and decay. Unfortunately, the woodpile has become an unattractive eyesore and nuisance.
Since the woodpile is no longer needed for firewood, Dale and Chris decided it was time to move the pile. However, what seemed like an easy project soon turned into a monumental endeavor. The first challenge was to determine an appropriate location to relocate the wood. They wanted to create an enchanted trail in the forest, so the new spot had to be both accessible and visually appealing
The project took place in early September, with temperatures soaring into the mid-90s. The hot weather made the task even more challenging, as the heat drained their energy and made it difficult to work efficiently.
As they began the process of moving the woodpile, they realized just how heavy and cumbersome the logs were. Each log had to be lifted, carried, and carefully stacked in its new location, requiring a significant amount of physical strength and endurance
Additionally, the forest terrain posed its own set of obstacles. Uneven ground, fallen branches, and thick undergrowth made it difficult to navigate with the heavy logs. Dale and Chris had to carefully plan their route and clear a path as they went along, ensuring that the enchanted trail would be safe and enjoyable for future visitors.
To replace a septic tank, the old tank must be pumped and emptied of all its contents. Once emptied, the old tank is carefully removed from the ground using excavation equipment. The new septic tank is then positioned in the excavated area, connected to the plumbing system, and covered with soil to complete the replacement process.
